ITINERARY FOR: 9 DAYS TOUR FROM FES TO CHEFCHAOUEN & SAHARA DESERT

 DAY 1: ARRIVE IN FES

Upon arrival in Fes, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your riad or hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to participate in an optional Moroccan cooking class, beginning with a guided visit to the local souk. This introduction allows you to familiarize yourself with the aromas, spices, and culinary traditions that define Moroccan gastronomy.

In the afternoon, take a gentle stroll through the surrounding streets to absorb the rhythm of daily life. The ancient medina, with its layered history and vibrant atmosphere, offers a fascinating first encounter with the country’s cultural richness.

The evening is at leisure, allowing you to rest and prepare for the days ahead.

DAY 2: FES

Today is devoted to discovering the profound historical and intellectual heritage of Fes. Accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide, you will explore Fes el-Bali, one of the world’s largest and best-preserved medieval cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wander through its intricate maze of alleys lined with artisan workshops and bustling souks. Visit the prestigious Al-Qarawiyyin University—recognized as one of the oldest continually operating educational institutions in the world—and admire the exquisite craftsmanship of the Bou Inania Madrasa.

Optional experiences may include a pottery workshop to learn traditional ceramic techniques or a culinary session where you prepare authentic Moroccan dishes after selecting fresh ingredients in the market. These hands-on activities deepen your understanding of the city’s living traditions.

DAY 3: FES – CHEFCHAOUEN

Depart Fes and travel north through the Rif Mountains toward the enchanting town of Chefchaouen. Known for its striking blue-washed buildings, this mountain town offers a striking contrast to the dense medina of Fes.

Upon arrival, enjoy a guided orientation through its charming alleyways, peaceful squares, and artisan shops. The distinctive blue tones, originally believed to symbolize spirituality and protection, create an atmosphere of tranquility and reflection.

Chefchaouen’s relaxed pace and scenic mountain setting make it an ideal place to unwind while appreciating its unique architectural identity.

DAY 4: CHEFCHAOUEN – VOLUBILIS – IFRANE

Begin the morning with free time in Chefchaouen—perhaps including an optional private photoshoot to capture the magic of the Blue City in the soft morning light.

Later, depart toward the remarkable archaeological site of Volubilis. During a guided visit, explore its well-preserved mosaics, grand arches, and ancient basilicas that testify to Morocco’s Roman past and its role within the Mediterranean world.

The journey continues to Ifrane, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco” due to its alpine-style architecture, clean streets, and cool climate. The town’s distinct character offers a surprising yet charming contrast to Morocco’s traditional urban centers.

DAY 5: IFRANE – AZROU – MIDELT – MERZOUGA

Travel through the Middle Atlas Mountains, stopping in the cedar forests near Azrou where Barbary macaques roam freely among the ancient trees. The landscape gradually shifts from forested highlands to vast open plains as you continue through Midelt, a town nestled between mountain ranges.

As you descend toward the Sahara, the terrain becomes increasingly arid, revealing the first glimpses of desert horizons. Upon arrival in Merzouga, prepare for one of the most iconic experiences of the journey—a camel trek across the dunes of Erg Chebbi at sunset.

As the light fades, the dunes glow in hues of amber and rose. At your desert camp, a traditional Berber dinner awaits, accompanied by live music around the campfire beneath a canopy of brilliant stars.

DAY 6: DESERT EXCURSION TO NOMADS

Today offers a deeper exploration of the Sahara environment. Travel by 4×4 vehicle to visit a nomadic Berber family, where you will learn about desert life and centuries-old survival traditions.

Explore the abandoned kohl mine and the historic village of M’fis, then continue to Khamlia, known for its Gnawa musicians whose spiritual rhythms reflect sub-Saharan influences.

Adventure enthusiasts may try sandboarding or choose a quad bike excursion across the dunes. The day concludes with another peaceful evening in the desert, immersed in the warmth of Berber hospitality.

DAY 7: MERZOUGA – ERFOUD – RISSANI – MIDELT

After breakfast, depart the desert and head toward Erfoud, a town renowned for its fossil workshops. Here, you can observe how ancient marine fossils—evidence of a prehistoric ocean—are transformed into decorative stone pieces.

Continue to Rissani, historically a significant trading center and once the capital of the Tafilalet region. Its lively market offers a vivid glimpse into desert commerce and tradition.

The journey proceeds through changing landscapes back toward Midelt, where you will enjoy a restful evening.

DAY 8: MIDELT – MEKNES

Travel toward Meknes, one of Morocco’s imperial cities and a former royal capital. During a guided visit, admire the monumental Bab Mansour gate and explore the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, whose reign left a lasting architectural legacy.

Meknes combines imperial grandeur with a more tranquil atmosphere compared to other major cities. An optional cooking class may provide a final immersive culinary experience, allowing you to refine your appreciation FOR MOROCCAN FLAVORS.

DAY 9: RETURN TO FES

Your Moroccan journey concludes with a private transfer to the airport according to your departure schedule.

As you reflect on your experience—from ancient medinas and mountain landscapes to the profound stillness of the Sahara—you will carry with you lasting memories of Morocco’s cultural richness, natural beauty, and generous hospitality.
