ITINERARY FOR: 4 DAY TOUR FROM FES TO MERZOUGA

DAY 1: FES – IFRANE – CEDAR FOREST – MIDELT – ZIZ VALLEY – ERRACHIDIA – DADES GORGES

Your four-day adventure begins with an early departure from your accommodation in Fes. Traveling south through Imouzzer, you will reach Ifrane, celebrated for its alpine-style architecture, cool climate, and well-maintained streets—hence its nickname, the “Switzerland of Morocco.”

The journey continues into the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, home to the Barbary macaques. Here, you may observe these fascinating primates in their natural habitat while enjoying a peaceful forest setting.

Proceed to Midelt for lunch. This town, situated between the Middle and High Atlas ranges, is known for its apple orchards and mineral resources. In the afternoon, cross the Tizi-n-Tilghmt Pass and follow the course of the Ziz River, whose valley is lined with extensive palm groves and fortified villages.

Upon reaching Errachidia, continue toward Boumalne Dades and the Dades Gorges. En route, you will stop to admire the distinctive “Monkey Fingers” rock formations and a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the valley. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be arranged in a comfortable hotel.

DAY 2: DADES GORGES – TODRA GORGES – ERFOUD – MERZOUGA SAHARA – OVERNIGHT IN A LUXURY CAMP

After breakfast, depart for the Todra Gorges. Carved by the Todra River, this spectacular canyon features towering red limestone cliffs that rise dramatically above the valley floor. You may take a leisurely walk through the gorge to fully appreciate its scale and natural beauty.

Continue through the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad, with time allocated for lunch along the way. In the afternoon, arrive at the Merzouga Sahara Desert, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Here, you will exchange your vehicle for camels and embark on a tranquil trek across the sands. A pause atop a high dune allows you to admire the magical sunset as the desert transforms into warm tones of amber and crimson.

Upon reaching your luxury desert camp, you will be welcomed with traditional hospitality. Dinner will be served beneath a vast canopy of stars, followed by Berber drumming and music around the campfire. Overnight stay in a private, fully equipped desert tent.

DAY 3: EXPLORE MERZOUGA REGION – NOMADS – KHAMLIA – MERZOUGA LAKE – ERG CHEBBI – PALM GROVE

An early awakening is highly recommended to witness the sunrise over the dunes—an unforgettable moment of serenity and shifting light.

After breakfast, return by camel to Merzouga village, where your driver awaits. The day is dedicated to exploring the broader Merzouga region by 4×4 vehicle.

Begin with an off-road journey to visit an ancient kohl (eyeliner) mine, reflecting the region’s mineral heritage. Continue to meet local nomadic families in their traditional woven tents, where you will share Berber tea and learn about their resilient desert lifestyle.

Next, visit Khamlia village, known for its vibrant Gnawa music, rooted in sub-Saharan African traditions. Enjoy a musical performance before lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, stroll through a palm grove oasis and drive to the seasonal Merzouga Lake—also known as Flamingo Lake—an important site for migratory birds when water is present. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be arranged at a hotel in Merzouga.

DAY 4: MERZOUGA – RISSANI – ERFOUD – ZIZ VALLEY – IFRANE – FES

After breakfast, depart Merzouga for Rissani, the historic capital of the Tafilalet region. This town remains an important commercial center, particularly on market days (Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday), when its traditional souk becomes lively and vibrant.

Following a visit to the market, continue to Erfoud, where you will explore a workshop specializing in fossilized marble—evidence of the region’s prehistoric marine history.

The return journey follows the Ziz Valley once more, with a stop at a panoramic viewpoint to admire the extensive palm groves. Continue through the cedar forests and pass Ifrane before arriving back in Fes.
