ITINERARY FOR: 3 DAYS TOUR FROM ERFOUD TO THE SAHARA DESERT & ZIZ VALLEY

DAY 1: ERFOUD – FOSSIL WORKSHOPS – TAFILALET OASIS – ERG CHEBBI – DESERT CAMP

Your three-day desert experience begins in Erfoud, a town renowned for its extraordinary fossil industry. After meeting your driver-guide, you will visit one of the region’s fossil workshops, where skilled artisans transform prehistoric marine fossils—dating back over 350 million years—into polished decorative pieces. This introduction provides fascinating insight into the geological history of southeastern Morocco, once submerged beneath an ancient sea.

Leaving the town behind, the route passes through the expansive Tafilalet oasis, one of the largest palm groves in Morocco. Here, intricate irrigation systems sustain thousands of date palms, forming a vibrant green corridor against the arid desert backdrop.

As the landscape gradually transitions into open desert terrain, the majestic dunes of Erg Chebbi begin to rise dramatically on the horizon. Upon arrival in Merzouga, you will prepare for a camel trek across the golden sands. Accompanied by experienced camel handlers, you will ride into the dunes at sunset, when the shifting light transforms the desert into hues of amber and crimson.

After approximately one hour of gentle trekking, you will reach your luxury desert camp nestled among the dunes. A traditional Moroccan dinner will be served beneath the stars, followed by live Berber drumming around the campfire. The silence of the Sahara at night—interrupted only by the wind shaping the dunes—creates a deeply contemplative atmosphere.

Overnight in a private desert tent equipped with comfortable bedding and modern amenities.

DAY 2: DESERT EXPLORATION – NOMADIC ENCOUNTERS – KHAMLIA VILLAGE – PANORAMIC DUNES

Rise early to witness sunrise over Erg Chebbi, an extraordinary spectacle as the first light reshapes the contours of the dunes in soft gold and rose tones.

After breakfast at the camp, your exploration continues by 4×4 vehicle, allowing access to remote desert landscapes beyond the main routes. The first visit is to a nomadic Berber family living in traditional woven tents. Welcomed with mint tea, you will learn about their pastoral lifestyle, seasonal migration patterns, and the enduring resilience required to inhabit such an environment.

The journey proceeds toward the rocky plains surrounding the dunes, where black volcanic stones contrast sharply with the surrounding sand seas. Along the way, you may encounter small desert oases and abandoned mining settlements that testify to the region’s complex history.

Later, visit Khamlia village, home to the Gnawa community, descendants of Sub-Saharan Africans who brought with them a rich musical tradition. Here, you will attend a live performance of Gnawa music—characterized by hypnotic rhythms and spiritual chants—while gaining insight into its cultural and historical significance.

In the afternoon, return to a hotel near the dunes for rest and relaxation. You may choose to walk independently into the nearby sands or simply enjoy the tranquil desert environment.

Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel overlooking the dunes.

DAY 3: MERZOUGA – RISSANI – ZIZ VALLEY – RETURN TO ERFOUD

After breakfast, depart toward Rissani, the historical heart of the Tafilalet region and former capital of the Alaouite dynasty. If your visit coincides with one of the weekly market days (Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday), you will experience a vibrant traditional souk where rural communities gather to trade livestock, spices, textiles, and agricultural produce. Unlike modern markets, this souk preserves centuries-old customs and rural authenticity.

Continue northward toward the Ziz Valley, one of Morocco’s most breathtaking natural corridors. From an elevated panoramic viewpoint, admire the winding river as it nourishes thousands of palm trees below, creating a striking contrast between verdant life and surrounding desert cliffs.

The drive offers ample opportunities for photography and quiet reflection before returning to Erfoud in the afternoon. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel or preferred drop-off location.

This concludes your three-day exploration of the Sahara region from Erfoud—a journey marked by geological wonder, cultural encounters, and the timeless majesty of the desert.
