ITINERARY FOR: MERZOUGA DESERT EXCURSION 4X4 IN ERG CHEBBI

Your desert exploration begins in the morning after breakfast, typically departing around 10:00 a.m. from your accommodation in Merzouga. Accompanied by an experienced local driver-guide, you will embark on a full-day 4×4 adventure around the magnificent Erg Chebbi dunes.

The first stop is often the seasonal Lake Serji, located west of Merzouga. When filled, this tranquil body of water attracts flamingos and migratory birds, offering a surprising contrast to the surrounding arid landscape. The reflections of dunes and sky create exceptional photographic opportunities.

From there, you continue to Khamlia village, home to a community of Gnawa descendants whose ancestors arrived from regions such as Mali and Sudan centuries ago. In a welcoming local setting, you will attend a live performance of traditional Gnawa music. The hypnotic rhythms of drums and castanets reflect spiritual and cultural narratives deeply rooted in African heritage. Guests are often invited to participate, adding an interactive dimension to the experience.

After this cultural immersion, the journey continues along segments of the historic Paris–Dakar Rally route, navigating desert tracks toward the Mifis mining area. Here, you will explore remnants of old lead mines and observe fossilized formations embedded within the desert terrain—evidence that this region was once submerged beneath ancient seas.

The excursion then leads to a nomadic encampment situated near the dunes. You will be welcomed with traditional mint tea and have the opportunity to converse with a Berber nomadic family. Your guide will facilitate meaningful exchange, explaining how these families adapt to extreme climatic conditions, seasonal migrations, and desert life. This encounter offers rare insight into resilience, simplicity, and cultural continuity.

A traditional Berber lunch may be arranged either with a nomadic family or in a local village setting. The meal, typically prepared by local women, features authentic dishes served in traditional style, allowing you to experience Saharan hospitality firsthand.

In the afternoon, the exploration continues around the perimeter of the Erg Chebbi dunes, passing through the irrigated agricultural plots of Hassi Labied. Here, you will learn about traditional irrigation systems that sustain date palms and vegetable gardens despite the harsh environment.

The excursion concludes with a scenic drive back to Merzouga, usually arriving around 4:00 p.m. You return enriched by a day of discovery—having experienced not only the physical beauty of the Sahara but also its cultural depth and human warmth.
